New collaborative initiative called Tough Times is available for help
In mid-December, NCO Youth & Family Services (NCO) announced the formation of a Tough Times Initiative which is a collaboration of community resources coordinated by NCO to assist individuals of the greater Naperville area who are faced with stress due to the current economic conditions.
In a press release, NCO’s Executive Director, Ron Hume said, “NCO has been very fortunate to have the never-ending support of our community and during these tough times we wanted to make ever effort to give back even more to help to the people in our community who are most affected. We have the expertise and the connection to resources to help individuals and families navigate through the rough waters there are facing."
NCO will be opening up 15 free short term/solution focused counseling slots a week and information and referral assistance, to individuals and families who are experiencing situational stress and anxiety. "We will work to connect them with the necessary resources to get back on track,” added Hume.
This program aims to help individuals, couples, and families who have experienced distress as a result of recent, current, or potential threat of home foreclosure, bankruptcy, loss of investments/retirement, job layoff, unemployment and/or reduced work hours. Through a network of non-profit agencies, businesses, and service individuals will be providing resource coordination, employment/career counseling, individual and/or family counseling, food/personal care essentials, credit counseling, and budgeting services.
The goals for this program are to: promote awareness of free services within the network of community non-profit agencies and businesses; provide case management and referral service to link people with appropriate services and offer short-term, solution-focused counseling free of charge to qualified individuals and families who are facing situational issues. The Tough Times Initiative will run through June 2009 and possibly extend beyond that time depending on the need.
The Tough Times Initiative is a collaborative effort with NCO and Charter One Bank, the Community Career Center, Easter Seals, Loaves and Fishes, Naperville CARES, National City Bank, Samaritan Interfaith Counseling Center and others.
Hume states “For the past 37 years, NCO has been a resource in our community and we want to remind people of the services that are available to them. No one needs to face these challenges alone. There are resources available and we want people to know we are here to help. “
For more information and assistance contact the Tough Times Initiative Case Manager Kari Sikich at (630) 717-9408, extension 3.
